It’s something I hear a lot when people see my fused glass work:
“Wow… that’s beautiful. But I could never do something like that—I’m not artistic enough.”
And every time I hear it, I want to pause and say:
“Actually, you might be more creative than you think.”
You Don’t Have to Be a “Natural Artist” to Make Art
There’s a common belief that creativity is something you’re either born with or not. That if you didn’t grow up drawing, painting, or crafting, you missed the boat.
But the truth is, most people who create beautiful things didn’t arrive there overnight. They started with curiosity.
They started not knowing what they were doing.
And they let themselves experiment.
I didn’t become a glass artist by waking up one day and knowing how to do it all. I made plenty of trial-and-error pieces. I watched colors behave in unexpected ways. I learned. And I still do.
Fused Glass Is a Beautiful Blend of Structure and Play
One of the most wonderful things about fused glass is that you don’t need to sketch, paint, or sculpt to get started. You’re working with color, shape, texture, and light. You’re arranging materials and letting heat and chemistry do some of the magic.
In other words, it’s not about perfection—it’s about exploring what’s possible.
The Fear of Not Being Creative Enough Is Normal… But It’s Not the Truth
You might feel unsure at first.
You might compare your beginner efforts to someone else’s years of experience.
You might second-guess your instincts.
But creativity doesn’t come from some special gene. It comes from doing.
If something in you lights up when you see colorful, handmade glass… follow that spark. Let yourself play. Let yourself learn. Let yourself be a beginner.
Because here’s the thing:
You don’t have to call yourself an artist to make art.
You just have to be willing to try.
