What Makes Glass So Magical? A Look at Color, Light & Movement

I’ve been working with glass for many years now, and I still find myself in awe of it. Whether it’s a little pendant fresh out of the kiln or a large bold wall panel catching the sunlight at just the right angle, glass has this way of glowing that never gets old.

There’s something about it—how it bends light, shifts color, and seems to move even when it’s perfectly still—that just feels... magical. So I thought I’d take a moment to share what makes glass so special to me, and why I think so many people (maybe you!) are drawn to it too.

The Color is Alive

One of the coolest things about glass? The color doesn’t just sit on the surface—it lives in the material. And that color can change depending on the light, the background, or even how you hold it.

  • Opaque glass gives bold, punchy color that really stands out.

  • Transparent glass lets the light pour through, giving that glowing, stained-glass-window kind of vibe.

  • Dichroic and reactive glass? It’s a total wild card. You never really know how it’ll come out until it’s been fired—and that surprise is part of the fun.

Layering different types of glass together in a fused piece is kind of like mixing paint, but way more dimensional since the colors don't actually blend together. You can get some truly stunning effects—and every kiln firing feels like a little reveal party.

💡 Glass + Light = Magic

Glass and light are best friends. Whether it’s sunlight streaming through a window or soft lamp light hitting a pendant just right, glass needs light to show off.

Even the simplest pieces come to life when they catch the light. Add a clear cap, some iridescent shimmer, or even just a good angle, and suddenly your piece is glowing like it has its own inner spark.

That’s one of my favorite parts of working with glass—it’s never static. It changes with the time of day, the lighting, the mood. It keeps surprising you.

🌊 Movement Without Motion

Even when a piece of glass is just sitting there, it feels like it’s moving. Swirls, bubbles, layered transparencies—they all give this beautiful illusion of motion.

And maybe that’s because glass is always in motion during the making process. It starts as something sharp and fragile, then melts and softens, shifts and flows—and by the time it cools again, it’s transformed.

There’s something kind of poetic about that. It’s art that holds movement and stillness at the same time.

🧡 Why We’re So Drawn to It

I’ve had so many people walk into my booth at a show and say, “There’s just something about glass…” And I totally get it. It’s colorful, luminous, a little unpredictable, and somehow timeless all at once.

Maybe it’s the way it captures light. Maybe it’s the way it transforms. Maybe it’s just the pure joy of seeing something so beautiful and knowing it came from heat, grit, and imagination.

Whatever it is—glass has a way of connecting with people. And that, to me, is the real magic.

Want to Explore It for Yourself?

If you’ve been curious about working with glass but aren’t sure where to start, I’ve got a free guide that breaks down the different types of glass art—and helps you figure out which one might be the best fit for you.
