Why I Fell in Love with Fused Glass (and Why You Might Too)!

When I think back on my earliest memories of being drawn to glass, it takes me to when I was a kid. I remember being completely mesmerized the first time I saw glassblowing. Watching the molten glass turn from glowing orange to something clear, shiny, and solid felt like magic. The movement, the heat, and the transformation of the material lit a spark in me that never went out.

At the time, I thought glassblowing was the only way to create with glass, but it felt out of reach—something reserved for big studios and people with access to special equipment. I never imagined I’d one day find my own way into glass art.

Discovering Fused Glass

When I eventually discovered fused glass, it was like finding the missing piece. Unlike glassblowing, fused glass is more accessible—you don’t need to stand in front of a roaring furnace to create something beautiful. Instead, you can use a kiln to carefully heat pieces of glass until they fuse together.

The first time I tried it, I was hooked. I loved the forgiving nature of fused glass. Unlike some other art forms, there’s room for happy accidents. If a design doesn’t come out quite the way I imagined, I can often adjust, refire, or reimagine the piece into something new. That flexibility keeps the process exciting and makes it less intimidating for beginners.

The Joy of the Process

For me, the magic is in the hands-on work of cutting and stacking glass. I’ll spread pieces out on my work table like puzzle pieces, moving them around, layering colors, and experimenting with shapes. It’s a little like painting, except my “brushstrokes” are sheets, scraps, and bits of glass.

And then comes my favorite part: waiting for the kiln to do its job. There’s this mix of anticipation and curiosity that never gets old. When I finally open the kiln, it feels like unwrapping a present—sometimes it’s exactly what I pictured, and other times it’s a complete surprise that makes me love the piece even more.

Why You Might Fall in Love with It Too

I think fused glass appeals to so many people because it offers the perfect balance of creativity and discovery. You don’t need to be a master artist to make something beautiful—beginners can create stunning pieces right away. At the same time, the possibilities are endless, so you can keep experimenting and pushing yourself as your skills grow.

Fused glass is also incredibly versatile. You can make jewelry, wall art, dishes, ornaments, sun catchers—the list goes on. Whether you want to decorate your home, give handmade gifts, or just enjoy the meditative process of creating, fused glass offers something for everyone.

For me, fused glass combines the wonder I felt as a kid watching glassblowers with the joy of experimenting and creating with my own hands. It’s forgiving, playful, and endlessly inspiring. And if you give it a try, you just might fall in love with it too.
